As their original Hitachi Deskstar hard drive had completely failed, our customer also supplied us with an 'unknown' Western Digital hard drive from the bottom of the panel dated 2007.
Using an external reader we could see that the Beckhoff TwinCat and Windows elements were present, but the drive would not boot due to a corrupt boot sector and Windows elements. This was very lucky as the customer has no backups, no OEM support, and no similar machine to copy the software from.
We reinstalled the Windows elements using our OEM master copy. The drive then successfully booted on our host machine. We were then able to clone the now functional and bootable Western Digital drive to a new Seagate IDE drive which can go straight in the machine and a new Patriot SSD as a backup for the customer to keep in a locked drawer in case of emergencies!
